Discount price for my book
Apparently, Amazon is offering my book at a discount. Right now, you can get When Hope is Not Enough: a how-to guide for living with and loving someone with Borderline Personality Disorder for $17.96 versus $19.95. Don’t know why they’re doing it. Another quick review from my group… Disclaimer: I just downloaded WHINE. I have not read the entire book. However, the section on validation is excellent, excellent, excellent! For some reason, I’m always deeply impressed when someone actually understands this concept. Not only is validation explained in a complete way but sample conversations are also given with suggested validating language. This section alone needs to be required reading for…

Andy Dick… Wow, what a mess
Well, I haven’t written anything EVER about Andy Dick… but I read an article today that puts him high on the celebrity BPD meter… I also watch the YouTube clip of him being thrown off of Jimmy Kimmel’s show. Here is the article and the clip: Comedian Andy Dick arrested in drug, sexual battery case in Murrieta From the Associated Press Andy Dick, 42, was arrested today on suspicion of drug use and sexual battery in Murrieta. The former ‘NewsRadio’ star allegedly fondled a teen and pulled down her tank top outside a restaurant. Police say they found marijuana and Xanax in his possession. By David Kelly, Los Angeles Times…

The Nature of Hope
Several years ago I read Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh (see Reading List for purchasing this book). I have often found a quote on the Internet in quote databases and such from this book which says: Hope is important, because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. But the funny thing is, this quote is taken out of context. This quote is from a longer one called “Hope as an Obstacle.” A more complete quote is this one (emphasis is mine): Hope is important, because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we…

Book Review of WHINE from “Tides of Crazy Love”
The author of this book, Bon Dobbs, is the founding leader of my online google support group – ATSPGroup. His wife has been diagnosed with BPD and his daughter struggles with emotional dysregulation similar to that of BPD. When I found this group, I had just come away from the Welcome To Oz group known as WTO-Staying. I was tremendously discouraged (support-wise), because the folks there just didn’t seem to “get” this disorder… from my perspective as a suffer and as a non to my BPDH. There were a few informed folks who were seriously trying to explain the underlying fears and irrational thoughts behind BPD, but most of the…

The DSM-IV and Bon’s view of BPD/ERD – What’s required?
One of my commenters pointed out that the DSM-IV allows (because of the 5 of 9) for 256 different configurations of BPD. I can’t help but feel that perhaps if there are 256 configurations of a disorder, we are talking about a very non-specific diagnosis here. Perhaps we’re talking about several different diagnoses. I don’t really know. I try and address the idea of ERD (although I call it BPD throughout my book because that is the diagnosis that is recognized) in my book, with the core features being emotional dysregulation, impulsiveness and shame. I don’t think all 256 configurations would include all of those – but IMO (and I…

Why you should NEVER let a person with BPD have access to a gun
Here’s an article from CNN about guns in homes: More than half firearm deaths are suicides Story Highlights Recent Supreme Court ruling on guns, airsoft snipers, etc. focused on protection from home invasion Suicides accounted for 55 percent of nearly 31,000 firearm deaths in 2005 in U.S. More gun-related suicides than homicides and accidents in 20 of last 25 years Research shows if gun in home, higher likelihood of suicide or homicide in home ATLANTA, Georgia, (AP) — The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on gun ownership last week focused on citizens’ ability to defend themselves from intruders in their homes. But research shows that surprisingly often, gun owners use the…
