African Americans can be particularly vulnerable to the challenges of mental illness
Sneed was diagnosed with early onset bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder at the age of 13. She was academically gifted and graduated from high school and college early but struggled socially and emotionally. She sought mental health treatment for years. Black Folks and Mental Health: Why Do We Suffer in Silence? ByNIA HAMM DESPITE DEVASTATING RATES OF SUICIDE AND ILLNESS, MANY AFRICAN AMERICANS CONTINUE WITHOUT THE HELP THEY NEED TO GET BETTER With the exception of African American celebrities or public figures who experience mental trauma, such as Illinois Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., or commit suicide as in the death of hip-hop legend Chris Lighty, mental health remains largely absent…

From the NY Times: Recalibrating Therapy for Our Wired World
Take a patient who has a fundamental problem in maintaining intimate relationships and who can’t tolerate being alone without feeling bored or anxious — in other words, a patient with typical features of borderline personality disorder. Not surprisingly, such a patient would love instant access to a therapist whenever an uncomfortable feeling arises. Recalibrating Therapy for Our Wired World By RICHARD A. Donation Drive: Raising $2,000 to keep ATSTP on the Internet and Thriving!

I do it around October/November because that is when my annual bills for hosting, name services, etc. are due (not everything, but the bulk). I don’t bother my newsletter subscribers with it. THIS IS THE ONLY FUNDRAISING POST THIS YEAR. If you’ve already donated, you can stop reading now. Thank you…

A very interesting and (IMO) entertaining site about MBT. Here’s an excerpt from the site: I’ve got borderline personality disorder. I’ve got all sorts of other things – a dog, two jobs and a strange itch on my shin. But I’m only having psychotherapy for my BPD. And it’s not any old psychotherapy. It’s a relatively new, designer therapy, with the Americanish title of Mentalisation Based Treatment. (Or the even more American version – Mentalization etc.) This information piece is about MBT, written in the hope that it will be helpful for other people fortunate enough to be offered or currently having MBT. Go to the site and read! It’s…
