The Linehan Institute Award Benefit will be held at the Midtown Loft, NY on May 20, 2015.

800,000 people die by suicide worldwide every year. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) reduces suicide attempts by half.

The Linehan Institute Award Benefit honors those who have made significant contributions to improve access to treatment and reduce stigma for those who suffer from severe and complex mental disorders. Funds raised at the benefit help the Linehan Institute advance mental health through education, compassion, advocacy, and research.

Award honorees will include Benedict Carey of the The New York Times, receiving the Linehan 10,000 Gold Stars Award; the Minnesota Department of Human Services Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), receiving the Linehan Clinical Science Award; and Arthur Evans with the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disability Services, receiving the Linehan Courageous Heart Award.

The Linehan Institute was founded by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP, a professor of psychology at the University of Washington. Dr. Linehan has dedicated her life to working with people whose lives are at risk due to crippling and incapacitating psychological problems. The Linehan Institute, as well as the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington, share a passion and determination to raise awareness about mental health. Through the provision of compassionate and effective therapies, the many who suffer from complex mental disorders can have renewed lives. A substantial evidence base and ongoing research points to the effectiveness of DBT for various populations (see http://www.linehaninstitute.org/research).

Dr. Linehan is the treatment developer and driving force behind Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – a treatment developed for the most severe mental disorders and suicidal individuals. In clinical trials around the world, DBT has been shown to cut suicide attempts in half and reduce psychiatric hospitalization. It has been found effective at treating borderline personality disorder (BPD), substance dependence, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and eating disorders.
