Substance Abuse and BPD – Poll Results
Today, I closed the poll regarding substance abuse and Borderline Personality Disorder. I got results I expected – 76% of respondents said the substance abuse was an issue with their loved one with BPD (or themselves of they had BPD). Statistics in the medical/research community vary widely, some cite a number of 54%, others more like 75% (which is what I suspected). I think that substances are used in an impulsive manner in BPD and they are used to quell emotional pain or to “stop the mind” (from worry thoughts or ruminating). Anyway, the results were not a surprise at all. Of course, as always, this is not a scientific poll.

Very interesting poll..makes me want to do some polls. I had a drug problem at one point so I can relate to this for sure.

the pole does not supprise me mutch since people with borderline personality disorder quite often get involved in substance missuse form what i know they use this as one of the factors in diagnosis

your poll may not have been scientific, however accurate it is indeed. There is no question in my mind that BPD is a leadin cause of addiction, of any kind.. Im writing a journal, and would like to know if you can send me any supporting data to my email address, it would be greatly appreciated
