English culture can be very loveless, upper-class English culture (which everyone is meant to emulate - it has "hedgemony") is as loveless as it gets.

My own family problems come from grandparents stuck in a loveless marraige, and they were merely "aspirational" - if they'd just been happily poor, there might have been hope for them! but they had to try to be middle class and that meant emulating the upper class with their arranged marraiges and their stiff upper lips. And this is what caused my father to have BPD, as far as I can tell. So yes, I can understand Princess Di and what made the country go so nuts about her on an emotional level. It is indeed very sad.
